Each Bluetooth wireless device can also be connected to multiple piconets at the same times. Because piconets are dynamic and are established automatically as its enabled devices move into and out of the proximity boundaries, this is a very flexible and powerful feature of the Bluetooth system.

One of the greatest strengths of the Bluetooth knowledge, is that such an enabled device is capable of handling both voice and data transmissions at the same time without interfering with either communication. This feature means that users can enjoy a variety of convenient solutions concurrently such as: using a hands-free headset for voice calls; sending documents to a printer or fax; synchronizing a laptop or PDA; and using various mobile phone applications.

In addition to being able to get away from a myriad of wires to tangle you up, Bluetooth technology has also been designed to be surprisingly easy to setup and implement. Thus foraying into the vast ocean of Music, and especially into Hindustani Music, many young buds like me are likely to be concerned about their careers in this field. With the growth of the entertainment industry, which comprises of all sorts of possibilities and organizations, like the film industry, advertisement industry, radio and television industry etc., Music has become a highly respectable and lucrative career option. But unfortunately, many of us from a small town like Allahabad are unaware of where music is actually turning to. Well, in this fast paced age, where everything has converged to the era of â€œNanoâ€ (I am talking of the latest technology that has zoomed up like a Sapaat Taan of the Gwalior Gharana), I better express my views in a simple, direct, but a comprehensive manner. First things First - What is Music? Let us first know what Indian music in brief is all about. â€œGeetam, vaadyam tatha nrityam, triyam Sangeet muchchyateâ€, a maxim from the granth â€¦#34; Sangeet Ratnakar by the famous musicologist Sharangdev. The above maxim says that Indian classical music, which is a school of thought, comprises of three different arts which are: (a) Vocal, or Singing (the expression of sound vocally like Khayal, Ghazal, Bhajan etc.); (b)Playing of a musical Instrument (the expression of music through an Instrument like Sitar, Veena, Harmonium etc.) and last but not the least, (c)Dancing (The expression of music bodily through the art of Dance).

No matter how you express it, these three art forms are intertwined and interdependent on each other. This is true of either of the styles, or Paddhatees, in Indian music -- the North Indian Music and the Carnatic Music. The growth of the entertainment Industry has opened many new avenues and vistas for those who want to seriously pursue their love for music professionally. The field of Music (Singing, Dancing and Playing of Instruments) offers many different kinds of career options based on a personâ€™s interest and capabilities. Broad categorizations of opportunities available in the music industry include -

1. Teaching: One of the most traditional trades in music. Those who prefer a one to one interaction can start their very own music school where they can teach / train other aspiring singers. You can open coaching class for training students for scholarships and competitive exams such as the Sangeet Natak Academy, MHRD, NET, for shows like Sa Re Ga Ma etc., jingles for ad campaigns. This is no doubt a very lucrative career option as well. Nevertheless I would like to suggest, come out of this and explore some other options as well! 2. A career in this focused zone can not be ignored in todayâ€™s world. 6. Event Management/ Organizer: You need to be creative and an instinctive manager, or a supervisor. One can organize music shows for music companies or ever commercial organizations for eg. while launching a new product or service. After all, what does SpicMacay do? Or, why to go that far, the music conferences organized by Prayag Sangeet Samiti every year too are an example. Wonder, they may be looking to outsource the management of the event to some one who can deliver. 7. Music Therapists: Examples are plenty where music has been successfully utilized for therapeutic purposes. It has been used even for increasing crop , or milk production. One can setup a clinic in a Spa, like that is done by an aroma therapist or a gemologist etc and cure people and do something for a social cause.

8. Music Composer: This is one of the most creative and innovative field in music where, â€œYou Make Musicâ€. Yes, you will make people tap and rap to your music. This seems to be very interesting but at the same time it has to be an intelligent work done. A music director, or a composer, must know various kinds of music. Suppose, you are given a task to make a track which has the â€˜feelâ€™ of Arabic music or Boul geet or Lavani. Did you notice, I said â€˜feel ofâ€™â€¦, that means it should present the mood of Arabic music (or Boul or Lavani), but at the same time it should not be totally Arabic music.

9. Music Arranger: His job is different than that of the music composer but is not exactly what people think. He has to â€˜arrangeâ€™ music of a song or background scores. One needs to have a great knowledge of various instruments, sounds etc. and should be able to setup a network of all kinds of music professionals whose services can be harnessed as per need of the Music Director.

10. Orchestration: Remember â€œMaihar Bandâ€ of Ustad Allahuddin Khan! Another one of Zubin Mehta? I can suggest some more names like, Beethoven, Mozart, Hyden etc. All of them created music using various instruments and instrumentalists and created history.

11. Website or Software Designer: I am not joking. If you are a software professional, or a website designer, you can create a music website of your own and also a software and people will admire you.

12. Paper Reading: If you have a good understanding of music, you can write a paper and read it to discerning audiences. That means explain your research or project to an audience. If you know how to use power-point of Ms Office in Windows you can make a power-point presentation and can give lecture using it.

13. Music Restorer: Surely you know that old and famous paintings require restoration. So do old music recordings. Anticipation has been high for the Nokia N82, ever since it was announced. Here, finally, would be the phone to end all phones, the phone that does everything. It would be packed with features, look beautiful and essentially, it would do anything.

All along, this was to be Nokia's big shot at utter genius; the phone that does everything right, that everyone loves and adores. Nothing but perfection is acceptable. It's curious, as well, that during the run up to Christmas, and into this new year, the news of the Nokia N82 has been more or less overshadowed by the news of its elder brother, the N95 8Gb. Why is it curious? Because this is easily the more capable phone of the two.

As the evolution of Nokia's famous Nseries of mobile phones, the N82 was always destined to follow a certain design ethos, specifically that of the Nseries as a whole: "discover, capture, share". As a design ethos, it reflects the goals of the N-phones, but it focuses specifically on the later models, such as the N95, N95 8Gb and N82.
It's a very enticing slogan, as well. being deliberately evocative, but without really telling you anything about what the phone actually does. We'll come back to this notion of discover, capture, share later in this review, but first of all, let's take a look at the Nokia N82 as a whole.

Design & Construction

Nokia, in their Nseries range, have always made very striking handsets. It's been a feature of the range since the very first models in the range. Think back to some of the other N-phones, like the N91, the N80 or the N95. Very handsome phones, to be sure, and the same tradition has carried through into the N82.

The look of the phone, and the build quality, are undeniably well pulled off. It's a very pretty phone, with the softkeys almost flowing round to the sides, and the back of the phone, as is de rigueur nowadays, being rotated 90 degrees to make it look like a digital camera (which is an obvious move to make, as it has a xenon flash - see later - so making the side that actually faces people LOOK like a digital camera is a natural thing to do)

However, it should be noted that the Nokia N82 also retains one of the less desirable attributes of the earlier Nseries phones. There's no getting away from the size of the phone. For a smart phone, it's not THAT big, but it is certainly bigger (roughly the same size as its predecessor, the N73) than its main rivals, phones like the Samsung G800.

First Thoughts On Using The Phone

From the second the Nokia N82 is turned on, it's immediately apparent this is a Nokia phone, with the trademark startup animation and music signalling the phone powered up and ready to use. In terms of menu layout, if you've ever used an Nseries phone, you'll be right at home here. The icons are laid out almost exactly as you would find in an early Nseries phone, and it's, once again, very intuitive to use.

However, there has been some controversy over the keypad design, built as it is with small keys, and set very low down on the body of the phone, making one-handed usage more difficult than it is on some other phones. In fact, in terms of user friendliness, the keypad is alongside the N91, which isn't a glowing reference, as that phone was fiddly to use. The low-slung keypad also makes the phone top-heavy, given its size, which make it not sit properly in your hand, until you get used to the keypad position.

However, the N82 more than makes it up for its shortcomings in the design, when you consider its powerful feature set.

Ah yes, the advertising slogan: "discover, capture, share." With the first part, "discover", we're into the territory of the Nokia N82's big feature: built-in GPS. This exceptionally useful feature adds not just a GPS receiver to your phone, but also Nokia Maps. For the first time on an Nseries phone, as well, this feature is completely free. All you will pay, for any access of the GPS and maps, is your data rates on whichever tariff you go for.

The implications of this are obvious, as it makes the N82 the first mobile phone in the current era to give you full GPS navigation for absolutely no cost (aside from your network's data charges). The key thing, though, is that Nokia provision of their part of the system for free further develops GPS's big push into the mainstream phone marketplace.

But, of course, the question is whether the GPS is actually useful, and whether it works as described. There has been a glut of 5 megapixel mobile phones recently, as all of the big handset makers have scrambled to bring their own into production and to the masses of customers waiting for one. Phones like the Nokia N95, the Samsung G800, the Sony Ericsson K850i... they all have their merits, and they all have their foibles. But it's very clear that, entering into this cutthroat market, the Nokia N82 has its work cut out for it.

Once you have actually experienced the N82's camera, though, you'll realise it accomplishes its goals with aplomb. I have absolutely no hesitation in saying that this is simply the best camera phone on the market today. It manages that feat by having the aforementioned 5 megapixels, but tying those in with Vario Tessar lenses from Carl Zeiss (the premium lens maker), a whole raft of top-end software, and most importantly, the best flash I've seen on any mobile phone. It makes shooting photos in low light a joy, and easily outclasses every other camera phone I've seen.

As with the GPS, I really can't find ANY flaws in this particular feature of the Nokia N82.

Of course, it can also record video through that amazing camera, and once again, it performs very well, with a very high frame rate, and significantly higher quality videos than you're likely to see from its nearest rival, the Sony Ericsson K850i.

You can, of course, view any media you capture, be it photos, videos or even sound, through the N82's amazingly capable media player. And as another bonus, it shares the similar auto-rotation feature, seen in the K850i, whereby the screen switches to portrait or landscape mode, depending on how you hold the phone.

Once you've discovered something, then captured say, an image of it, the final step is to "share". With the Nokia N82, there are a huge range of options to do that.

As with nearly every phone nowadays, you would expect to get Bluetooth, and indeed you do get it. What you get in the N82 is the faster Bluetooth 2.0 standard, complete with support for stereo Bluetooth headphones. In other words, you can also double your phone up as a music player, and listen to music wirelessly, with Bluetooth headphones.

Also, the phone supports just about every data standard you could think of, from GPRS, through EDGE (although, that's not an issue over here in the UK), to 3G and the fastest standard of them all, HSDPA, which can run at speeds of up to 3.6Mbps. By comparison, the broadband connection I most commonly use runs at 1Mbps. The difference in figures is made very real when you se the performance of the N82's HSDPA connection, and see for yourself how fast it is. You also have WiFi built in, providing yet another option for connecting to the net.

Once you're connected, there are a number of options for sharing, be it by email, or MMS, or even by automatic blogging of your photos. To put it simply, the Nokia N82 makes it VERY easy to share what's on your mind and on your phone.

Telephony/Messaging

As you would expect from a Nokia, the call quality of the N82 is superb, with crystal clear audio in every test condition I tried. The earpiece was loud and clear, and never once left me feeling that I'd run the risk of not hearing the other end of the conversation. As for messaging, once again, if you've used a Nokia, you'll be right at home here.

The only downside in this area goes back to my original complaint about the keypad: it's simply too small, and set too low on the phone, to be instantly intuitive. I found that dialling numbers and texting were hampered by the small keys. It IS useable, and you WILL get used to it, but it takes longer to get used to than it should.

Other Applications & Games

As has been noted in my previous reviews, games aren't really my area of expertise, so I tend not to get too excited about them. However, there is one thing of note in the Nokia N82's gaming setup, which may make some prospective customers of the phone very happy.

Basically, the N82 has inherited the N-gage gaming system, along with its sliding sibling, the N81. As a mobile games platform, the original N-gage did set a new benchmark in games, with 3D graphics and impressive sound. That legacy carries on to the N82, so if you ARE a gamer, you're going to find the N82 particularly fun to play on.

Conclusion

As you've probably worked out by now, I like the Nokia N82. I like it a lot. It has an impressive, nay phenomenal, array of features, and each feature is pulled off with panache. It's not without its fault, though. To summarise:

To put it simply, it is very rare in the world of mobile phones to see a feature-set as rich as this, and handled so well (particularly the camera, which is hands-down the best camera on any mobile phone). It may not be perfect, but it comes very, very close. And if you buy one of these, you will have made a VERY smart choice.

Releases on both formats tend to be priced similarly, a little more than their standard DVD counterparts.

When it comes to the players, a lot has happened, even in the past year. The first generation of standalone players for the two formats, released last year by Toshiba, Samsung and Panasonic, were seen as pricey and more aimed at early adopters than the general public, and have already been discontinued.

The latest generation of players have generally been seen as more value for money, but the smart money says to look elsewhere for now. Sony decided to include Blu-Ray playing capability for the Playstation 3 Console, which was undoubtedly a wise business move. It means the 5 million current PS3 owners already have a Blu-Ray player and gives those unsure which format to switch to an incentive to buy a PS3 as a low-risk option - even if Blu-Ray does go the way of the Betamax, they still have a state-of-the-art gaming console. In a similar tactic, consumers can now buy an HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360, which can also connect to a high-end PC via a USB connection.

As for now, Blu-Ray has the edge in the format war. Figures by Nielsen VideoScan, Gfk and the Nikkei, show that Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVDs at a ratio of 2 to 1 in the US and Europe and a ratio of 9 to 1 in Japan. This does not mean the battle is over just yet - a lot can still happen, particularly if Nintendo should decide to throw their hat in the ring by announcing an external player for either format for the Wii (a drive for normal DVDs will be released next year).

Hopefully at the end of the format war, the ultimate benefactor will be customers and not the corporations, but until then alternatives to standalone players can provide an affordable way to enjoy the best video and audio quality available for home viewing.

If you're interested in using your Webcam for streaming video, you'll want a Webcam system with a high frame rate. The frame rate indicates the number of pictures the software can grab and transfer in one second. For streaming video, you need a minimum rate of at least 15 frames per second (fps), and 30 fps is optimal. To achieve high frame rates, you must necessarily have a high-speed internet connection.

Once it captures a frame, the software broadcasts the image over your Internet connection. There are several broadcast methods. Using the most common method, the software turns that image into a JPEG (compressed) file and uploads it to a web server using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). You can easily place a JPEG image onto any web page in this manner and post your webcam images on the internet.

Codec, short for coder/decoder, is the common name used for the hardware and software that perform the compression.

After all the inputs and outputs, the audio and video streams are compressed up to 500 times. The resulting stream is then subdivided into labeled packets, which are sent to the recipient. The codec must be the same so the recipient's hardware decodes the received packets, see the images and hear the sounds. Mostly digital networks like ISDN and IP are used. That is the basic process involved in cam chat.

There are some things that present a problem with this type of communication. Some people believe that eye contact is very important in a conversation. Traditional telephone conversations do not allow any eye contact, but cam chat is believed to be even worse because it seems that the interlocutor avoids eye contact. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store has been getting some notable press lately. Around here at Silver Lining we recently rolled out a release to our software for iPhone compatibility, and then a few of us started talking about how the wi-fi music store might operate. Having spent my fair share of time in inernet music startups, I took a crack at breaking down how the backend of the wi-fi music store works for my coworkers. They insisted that I write my thoughts to the general public for consumption, so here goes.

I searched the web for clues, and came up with a few, but didn't actually find a technical description of the backend blessed by Apple or an Apple engineer blogging under a pseudonym. However, this statement by Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz was quite helpful - "Schultz said the Apple partnership required a substantial infrastructure upgrade for Starbucks.". Before I go into what I think exactly this infrastructure upgrade was, let's review how the store operates.

When an iPod touch is in range of a Starbucks T-Mobile hotspot, a fifth button appears on the iPod touch display. So that requires the wireless driver to continuously poll for Starbucks' SSID, or possibly trigger a callback on detection of a new SSID which matches certain criteria. Easy enough.

The clutch feature of the store client is that you can press a button and buy the song which is currently playing in the Starbucks. Great for impulse buying. But how does it work? There are several possible explanations, but what really seemed to be the hard part would be purchasing a song right when it stops playing, or shortly after. Those are the real impulse purchases. How do you synchronize the user clicking 'buy this track', with what is currently playing?

My answer is that you have a fixed playlist running on an iMac at the Starbucks location (the substantial upgrade that Schultz mentioned). The iMac downloads the playlist from the big iTunes store using a probably slightly modified iTunes client, and runs through each playlist, downloading new playlists as needed. "The Starbucks button allows you find out what is currently playing in the store plus the 10 previous tunes and purchase said music right on the spot.". So when you click 'Buy currently playing track', the music store client on the iPod notes the time, queries the iTunes store, and retrieves the list of 10 last played songs from that time. Pretty simple, and the key is that you can do it with a server side upgrade to the iTunes store and not much else (except for the iPod wi-fi store client and the iMac in Starbucks). Although I could see how in Starbucks' eyes that putting an iMac in a Starbucks would be a 'substantial infrastructure upgrade'.

I've told this to a few people, and some of them thought that the music was streaming through the internet to the Starbucks. Having spent many hours dealing with the nits of streaming audio over the internet, I can say that's probably not the case. It's just so much easier to use playlists and download the music in advance, you avoid all the technical problems associated with streaming.

I'm sure that we will see this functionality coming to iPhones and notebooks soon enough with a software upgrade. It would be interesting to take a look at the traffic flowing back and forth between the iPod touch and Apple's servers. That's on my todo list, but I've never really liked Starbucks coffee, so it might be a while.

How to Run Windows or Linux on your Intel powered Mac?

Have you ever wanted to run Windows or Linux applications on your Mac? Well if you have an Intel powered Mac running a Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later operating system you can run a complete Windows or Linux operation system in parallel while still running your Mac operating system.

What you need to do is install the Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac software on your system. To successfully run Parallels Desktop on your Mac you must have the following:-

* Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later. To check what version of Mac OS X you have got, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.

* An Intel-powered Core™ Duo or Core™ Solo Mac® Mini, iMac®, MacBook™, MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.

* A minimum of 768MB of RAM but 1GB is recommended.

* About 200 MB of hard disk space on the boot volume for Parallels Desktop installation.

* Sufficient space on your hard disks to allocate for the virtual machines, i.e. 15 GB of hard disk space is recommended for each virtual machine.

Installing Parallels Desktop is very easy. When it is installed you can then use it to install what it calls the Guest operation systems i.e. the other operating system such as Windows XP or Vista or Linux that you want to run at the same time as your Mac operating system. You can install any of the Windows operating systems but there is a Windows Express Installation Assistant especially for Windows XP and Windows Vista. You can also install using Typical or Custom installation settings. During the installation process you will have to insert the CD or DVD containing the Operating System software you want installed.

When the Guest operating system is installed it will run in a Window on your Mac screen. When you launch an application in the virtual machine with Windows installed, the application's icon appears in the Dock by default. Right-click (Control-click) the applications icon in the Dock, and select Keep in Dock. In this way even when the virtual machine is stopped, the application icon will remain in the Dock. If you click the Windows application's icon in the Dock it launches the virtual machine and then the Windows application.

Parallels Desktop includes specially developed tools that help you use your virtual machines in the most comfortable and efficient way.

To exchange files between the Mac OS X and your Windows virtual machine, you can set up one or more shared folders that will be visible to both operating systems.

In the virtual machine you can open Mac OS X applications. The list of Parallels Shared Applications is created during the installation of Parallels Tools. The list of your Mac applications is available when you choose All Programs -> Parallels Shared Applications from the Windows Start menu.

So now all those Windows applications or game you want to use can now be run on you Mac.

Furthermore, The Annual Christmas Retail Survey, released this week and available at the Deloitte website, predicts that this Christmas the most prominent trends in shopping are the increased use of the internet and demand for high-tech items.

The survey, which gathered, information from 1000 respondents, found that twice as many are expected to buy their gifts online compared to last yearâ€™s 14%. The survey also found that only one in 10 will spend a full day on the high street. This trend was aided by consumers becoming more familiar and confident with shopping online and improved customer service from e-tailers. The advantage of the internet as a shopping resource is obvious â€¦#34; consumers can avoid queues and items being out of stock while price comparison between different providers is only a click away. The important thing to remember if you are going do your Christmas shopping online is to allow for enough time for shipping in order to get items on time.

Consumer spending on high-tech items is also set to increase. Deloitte found that 44% of the respondents were planning to buy a computer game as a gift, up from 38% last year. 26% said they expected to purchase an MP3 player, an increase from 20% last year.
