With the arrival of mobile phones, the telecommunication world moved miles ahead. The history cell phone is a long story with big inventions and historical landmarks playing an ingredient part. Mobile phone , otherwise known as cell phone are long-range, portable electronic devices that are used for mobile communication which uses a network of specialised base stations known as cell sites. Along with the standard voice function of a telephone, mobile phones are also capable of supporting additional services including SMS for text messaging, email and packet switching for access to the internet. Most of the current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations that is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It was in 1945, with the invention of the zero generation (0G) of mobile phones, that the concept of mobile phones got popularised. In 1984, Bell Labs invented a "call handoff" feature that allowed mobile-phone users to travel through several cells during the same conversation. Motorola, the giant among mobile phones is considered as the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for handheld use in a non-vehicle setting. It was in 1979, in Japan, that NTT launched the first commercial cellular network. It was in the mid 1980’s when fully automatic cellular networks were introduced with the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system. This was followed by a boom in mobile telephone usage, particularly in Northern Europe. The first "modern" network technology on digital 2G cellular technology was launched in Finland in 1991 by Radiolinja on the GSM standard which also marked the introduction of competition in mobile telecoms. After a decade, NTT made the first commercial launch of 3G (Third Generation) mobile phones in Japan. Until the early 1990s, mobile phones were too large to be carried in a jacket pocket, because of which they were kept in vehicles as car phones. But with the miniaturisation of digital components, these devices became increasingly portable over the years. Among the mobile manufacturers, Nokia Corporation enjoys the tag of being the largest mobile manufacturer. It enjoys approximately 36% of the market share in the market. Mobile phone manufacturers can be grouped into two. Among the first group are the manufacturers that enjoy 75% of the market of the handsets sold around the globe.
